Most sore throats are viral, but strep, tonsillitis and abscesses need treatment. A quick rapid strep test tells us which one you are dealing with so you leave with the right prescription rather than a wait-and-see plan.
Symptoms to watch for
- Pain or scratchiness when swallowing
- Swollen glands in the neck
- White patches on the tonsils
- Fever with throat pain
- Hoarseness lasting more than a week
Come to the ER immediately if
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Drooling or an inability to swallow saliva
- Severe one-sided throat pain
- High fever with a stiff neck
How we treat sore throat
Rapid strep and throat culture testing, examination for abscess, pain and fever relief, antibiotics where indicated, and IV fluids if you cannot keep liquids down.
