A red patch of skin that is warm, spreading and painful is not something to watch for another day. Cellulitis and abscesses can move quickly, and both respond well to prompt treatment.
Symptoms to watch for
- Red, warm, swollen skin
- A painful lump or abscess
- Spreading redness or red streaks
- Fever with a rash
- Blistering or peeling skin
Come to the ER immediately if
- Redness spreading quickly or streaking up a limb
- Fever with a rash
- A rash with blistering or peeling
- Rash with difficulty breathing or facial swelling
How we treat infections & rashes
Physician evaluation, abscess drainage where indicated, wound cultures, IV or oral antibiotics, allergy treatment, and laboratory work when a systemic infection is suspected.
